List of old panels not good

Some electrical panels have a long track record of failure and should be replaced when found. At the top of the list is Federal Pacific Electric (FPE/Stab-Lok), known for breakers that fail to trip. Next is Zinsco (also Sylvania), where breakers can lose contact with the bus and stay energized. Challenger panels come next—aging units with reliability concerns and limited parts. Pushmatic (Bulldog) panels are very old, with no modern safety features and hard-to-source breakers. Older split-bus panels round out the list, lacking a main breaker and capacity. Upgrading these panels improves safety, reliability, and insurability.

Bryant

Bryant panels are older and can become unreliable as breakers age. While some Bryant breakers can be replaced with approved equivalents (like certain Eaton BR types), you have to be careful—using the wrong breaker or forcing a fit creates poor connections and heat issues. The bigger concern is the panel itself: worn bus bars, loose breaker fit, and limited capacity for modern loads. Swapping a breaker may solve a short-term issue, but it doesn’t fix underlying wear. At Wood Duck Electric, we evaluate the panel condition and either install properly listed replacements or recommend a full upgrade for long-term reliability

Federal pacific

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) panels, especially Stab-Lok, have a well-documented history of breakers failing to trip when they should. That means circuits can stay energized during a fault, which defeats the whole purpose of overcurrent protection. The connection between breaker and bus can also become unreliable over time. Because of these issues, many insurance companies will not cover homes with FPE panels or will require replacement before issuing a policy. These panels are considered unsafe by today’s standards. At Wood Duck Electric, we strongly recommend a full panel upgrade to modern, properly tested equipment for safety and insurability.

Wadsworth

Wadsworth panels are older and known for reliability issues as they age. Breakers can become loose on the bus, leading to poor connections and heat buildup. Replacement breakers are hard to find and often expensive, which leads to improper substitutions—never a good situation. These panels also lack capacity for modern electrical loads and don’t support newer safety protections well. Like other outdated panels, they weren’t designed for today’s demand. At Wood Duck Electric, we recommend evaluating and typically replacing Wadsworth panels with modern equipment for safer, more reliable performance and easier serviceability.

Zinsco

Zinsco panels (also sold under Sylvania) are known for serious reliability issues. The breakers can fail to trip during an overload or fault, which defeats their purpose. A major problem is the aluminum bus bar—breakers can lose contact or even melt into it while the circuit stays energized. You can’t always see the damage without opening the panel. Replacement breakers are limited and don’t fix the underlying design flaws. These panels also lack capacity for modern electrical demand. At Wood Duck Electric, we recommend full replacement of Zinsco panels to ensure proper protection, safe operation, and long-term reliability.

All fuse panel

Fuse panels become unsafe mainly because they’re easy to misuse. When circuits blow fuses, many people install larger fuses instead of fixing the problem. That overfusing lets wires carry more current than they’re rated for, causing overheating and damage inside walls. These systems also lack the capacity for modern loads and don’t support today’s safety protections like AFCI and GFCI. There’s no simple reset—you’re constantly replacing parts instead of correcting issues. Insurance companies often flag them as well. Upgrading to a breaker panel gives proper protection, more capacity, and a system designed for today’s electrical demand.
